NEWS AND EVENTS

2008 Living on the Land Mini-Series Program

The Treasure Valley Living on the Land Mini Series, sponsored by the University of Idaho Extension, is targeted to small acreage landowners and hobby farmers.  The four week series begins the first week of April at sites in Caldwell, Emmett, and Ontario, OR.

The mini-series is open to new participants who are interested in the topics:

  • Rodent & Wildlife Management

  • Animal Ownership,                 

  • Grazing, Caring for your Animals

  • Feeds and Feeding

  • Sustainable Farming,

  • Marketing Strategies

  • Farmers Markets and

  • Organic Production Practices

Caldwell classes will meet Monday evening from 6:30-9:30 pm at the UI Caldwell Complex, 1904 E Chicago, beginning April 7th Download the Caldwell Registration Form.

Emmett classes will meet Tuesday afternoons from 1-4 pm at the USDA Service Center, 1805 Highway 16, beginning April 8th Download the Emmett Registration Form.

Ontario classes will meet Thursday evenings from 6:30-9:30 pm at the Holy Rosary Medical Center, 351 SW 9th, beginning April 10th Download the Ontario Registration Form.

The cost at all locations is $10.00 per class or $35.00 for all four classes. Registration forms may be picked up at your local University of Idaho or Oregon State University extension office or on-line at http://www.ag.uidaho.edu/sustag/living_on_the_land.htm.

Pre-registration is required in early April so enough supplies and materials are available.  For more information or to register call the Canyon County Extension office at 208-459-6003

Content: This course is designed to help small acreage landowners care for their land sustainably. Course topics include

  • Market & Organic Gardening

  • Feeds and Feeding

Instructors: Stephanie Etter, Livestock Extension Educator, Karen Frusti, Program Manager, Ada County Extension, Rikki Wilson, Gem County Extension Educator, Tony McKammon, Payette County Extension Educator, and guests.

Cost: $275 per unit (2 attendees). Class limited to 25 at each location. Fee includes soil, water and forage tests, class binder and tours. Scholarships available. Also available for dual credit enrollment. A $25 deposit will reserve your seat.

2007 Cultivating Success Sustainable Small Acreage Farming & Ranching Course
October 25, 2007 - March, 2008.

This course has students taking a realistic look at their goals and resources, and helps them evaluate what type of small acreage enterprise is right for them.  Students are exposed to all types of farming and ranching systems, guest farmers speak to the class, and field trips are taken to local farms. 

Classes will be held at the Ada Community Library on Thursday evenings, bi-monthly.
