Since
1988, Western SARE (Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education) has
provided funding for over 30 USDA Cooperative State Research, Education,
and Extension Service competitive grants throughout the State of Idaho.
These grants have helped fund research and education projects aimed at
improving the sustainability of agricultural systems. SARE’s mission is to
expand knowledge and adoption of sustainable agriculture practices that
are economically viable, environmentally sound and socially acceptable.
Western SARE (WSARE) is one of four regional centers of the National SARE
program.
This
decentralized structure allows each administrative council to be
responsive to the needs of the states in its region.
The Western Region includes: Alaska, American Samoa, Arizona,
California, Colorado, Guam, Hawaii, Idaho, Micronesia, Montana, Nevada,
New Mexico, N. Mariana Islands, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.
WSARE is managed by a 14-member administrative council representing a
broad and diverse membership of farmers, ranchers, agribusiness, nonprofit
representatives, educational, and private
and government agricultural organizations. As leaders of SARE like to
boast, “business is not usual” at SARE. SARE is committed to providing
high quality research and education while minimizing
overhead and excessive costs.

As
many individual producers, researchers and educators have shown, Idaho
agriculture is dedicated to making farming operations more profitable,
conserving and enhancing the natural resources of the land, and
strengthening the quality of life for farmers, their families and
communities. Over the last seventeen years we have made tremendous
progress.
We
encourage others to help us research ways to put sustainable agriculture
practices into action. Please share the good news about the research and
educational efforts of the many scientists, producers, educators and
others who are featured here. |
