In
1999, Researchers at the University of Idaho Aberdeen R & E Center
tracked the development of "Merit" 2-row Spring Barley and
"Whitebird" Soft White Spring Wheat using photographs and
growing degree days to assist producers in management decisions.
Wheat
and barley are both cool season crops that have many similarities in
growth stage development and management needs. Producers who follow this
series of pictures will gain a better understanding of how the crops
develop, critical growth stages, and how management inputs affect yield
and grain quality. The pictures will follow the same plants throughout
the season. By using both field and close-up shots, producers can see
how the plants develop on a weekly basis and how temperature affects
growth.
