The District III & IV Extension Cereals Program for South-Central and Southeast Idaho is based at the University of Idaho Aberdeen Research and Extension Center.

The purposes of the program are to:

• Evaluate and report cereal cultivar performance at various locations in South Central and Southeastern Idaho.

• Evaluate and report management trials involving production and marketing of cereals.

• Provide training and support to cereal producers, agri-business personnel, and County Extension educators.

• Provide support to state and private breeding programs.

• Evaluate efficacy of new products and cereals management techniques.

• Investigate cereal disease problems and generate new disease management  techniques.

Education:
Ph.D., University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign; M.S., University of Delaware, Newark; B.S. University of Delaware.

Research:
Conducts research on cereal varietal adaptation, cropping systems, crop management and cereal root disease.

Extension:
Develops, prepares, and disseminates research-based information on culture and management of cereals including production, disease, and crop rotations. Integrates efforts of cereal researchers and specialists, county agents, industry representatives, and commodity groups to develop educational programs, newsletters, publications, field demonstrations, films, videos, and computer programs. Cooperates with university, federal, and other public and private personnel in Idaho and surrounding states.

Responsibilities:

Molecular characterization of cereal root pathogens, namely Fusarium, in southeastern Idaho. Our lab utilizes molecular markers to aid in species identification of field isolates of Fusarium. Our current project is focused on Fusarium culmorum and the genes it induces when infecting wheat and barley.
