Danny L. Barney
Education:
-
Ph.D., Cornell University
- M.S., Brigham Young University
- B.S., United States Coast Guard Academy
Research:
Professor Barney conducts field and lab research on the propagation, physiology, breeding, and cultivar development of huckleberries and bilberries
(Vaccinium species) native to the western United
States and western Canada. He is also involved in developing
cultivars of haskap (edible-fruited blue honeysuckle, Lonicera caerulea),
which is native to Japan and Eastern Eurasia. For ornamental
crops, he is engaged in research on the production and physiology of true firs
(Abies spp.) used for landscape ornamentals and Christmas trees.
Much of the fruit and ornamental research involves
developing and evaluating production systems for emerging specialty
crops.
Extension:
The production of high-value horticultural crops in Idaho is
the main focus of Professor Barney's extension program. This includes training programs, consultation, and the production of technical support materials for
Extension Educators, commercial horticulturists, and Master Gardeners.
