An Idaho sugar
beet grower participating in a University of Idaho demonstration
of rhizomania-resistant proprietary sugar beet varieties enjoyed
yields of up to 26.9 tons per acre in 1996 with one of these varieties,
compared with a 24.23-ton per area average. In 1992, when the disease
first struck his Rupert, Idaho farm, the grower plowed up one entire
field and harvested only half his expected yield from the second,
a loss of $30,000. Since 1992, well over 10,000 Idaho acres have
been diagnosed with the plant disease.
