GREENHOUSE POLICIES AND OPERATIONS  POLICIES

In November of 1996, a grand opening and dedication ceremony took place for the renovated Sixth Street Greenhouse, an important teaching facility for the Department of Plant, Soil and Entomological Sciences at the University of Idaho. With renovation, this $2 million addition, supported by the National Science Foundation, M. J. Murdock Charitable Trust and several commodity groups, offers faculty and students sophisticated facilities available for plant and insect research and teaching. The remodeled facility also satisfies federal guidelines for work with genetically engineered crop plants and for research on biological control of weeds and pests. Improvements to the greenhouse included:
  • Twenty-two independent greenhouse compartments

  • EPA approved pesticide spray chamber

  •  Plant tissue culture facility

  • One growth chamber with disabled access

  • Relocated two existing growth chambers into the basement

  • Constructed eight walk-in growth rooms in the basement

  •  Enclosed access corridors with insect screening and roof vents for fresh air supply

  • Replaced steam to hot water interface

  • Reglazing with improved heat retention

  • Computerized control systems for cooling and heating

  • New cooling systems

  • Supplemental lighting designed for 480 to 2,100 foot-candles in greenhouse compartments

  • New rolling benches

  • Concrete floors and drains throughout

In addition, proposed additions to the Sixth Street facility include:
  • New classroom

  • Conservatory space for teaching collection for courses in horticulture and forestry

  • Additional greenhouse space for research and teaching uses
