The ecology and evolutionary ecology of insect-plant
interactions has been Dr. Schaffner's main research focus
during the past 15 years. He has been studying the
chemical ecology of plant-herbivore interactions, the
mechanisms underlying biological invasions and the use of
specialist herbivores to control invasive weeds. More
recently, he has started working on multi-trophic
interactions in European grasslands, with emphasis on
elucidating the role of short-term and long-term
perturbations on community composition above- and
below-ground. Her he is particularly interested in
furthering the understanding of the role of soil
microorganisms as mediators of vegetation composition in
mountain and lowland ecosystems.
