Assistant Professor, Wheat Breeding & Genetics

Education:
Ph.D., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University; M.S., Northwest Agricultural University, China; B.S., Northwest Agricultural University, China

Research:
Accelerated breeding for Idaho and Pacific NW Wheat Commodity using a combination of traditional, wheat by maize hybridization, and MAS breeding methods, association mapping of loci associated with milling, baking quality, and nutrition quality, association mapping of loci associated with Fusarium foot rot and crown rot resistance, mapping and MAS of stripe resistance, Hessian fly resistance and dwarf bunt resistance, and increasing the potential for the utilization of cellulose from straw for biofuel and bioproduct production.

•   Genetic variation of Pacific Northwest wheat in response to wheat by  maize hybridization and microspore culture

•   Marker assisted breeding for predominant disease and pest resistance

•   Genomics and functional genomics assisted breeding for tolerance to draught and heat stress

•   Association mapping of loci associated with end-use quality

•   Comparative and association mapping of loci associated with Fusarium foot rot and crown rot resistance

•Germplasm improvement of straw cellulose and starch structure for biofuel production, grain phytic acid and antioxidant for human health
