Sustainable Agriculture at the University of Idaho is a multidisciplinary effort.  College of Agricultural and Life Sciences faculty in research and extension are collaborating with other faculty, producers, organizations and agricultural and environmental agencies to address some of the most challenging problems facing agriculture today.  The focus of our work in sustainable agriculture is to help Idaho producers improve agricultural productivity and economic return while preserving their natural resources.

Sustainable agriculture addresses the holistic nature of the farming operation by looking at the interrelationships between the ecology of the land, the economic realities of the farm as a business and the social aspects of quality of life for the farm family and the rural community.  There are many ways to improve the sustainability of a given farming system and the complexity of the issue lends itself to a variety of approaches and diversity of projects.

UI College of Ag and Life Sciences is a contact for information and resources about the USDA Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education grant program.  The USDA-SARE program is administered through four regions, with Idaho being one of 17 states and territories making up the Western Region SARE.

For more information on the Western Region SARE grants program visit their website http://wsare.usu.edu/.  The Sustainable Ag Network (SAN) is the outreach arm of National SARE, check out their website at http://www.sare.org/.
