host plants:

tender seedlings & succulent shoots
tree fruits and berries

symptoms:

Earwig damage

numerous irregular holes in leaves
lacework defoliation
holes gouged in fruit (earwigs)
glistening slime trails (slugs)

biology:

primarily nocturnal (daytime shelter under clods, plant debris)

CONTROL 
OPTIONS

physical:



protect seedlings & transplants with hotcaps and row covers
pitfall trapping, habitat traps (boards, soda straws, rolled newspapers)
elevate fruit, berries, vegetables above soil surface
handpick at night
copper-flashing barriers (slugs)

cultural:

limit cool, moist, decaying organic matter -
   water early in day
   avoid overwatering
   remove daytime refuge sites (weeds, brushpiles, soil debris)

biocontrol:

conserve insect and vertebrate predators

least-toxics:

dry diatomaceous earth
insecticidal soaps (earwigs, sowbugs)

conventional insecticides:

metaldehyde bait (slugs
