ORDER: Diptera - rasping mouthhooks

identification:

adults

gray, bristly flies smaller than common house fly

larvae

whitish, fleshy, legless, wedge-shaped grubs

symptoms:

above ground

wilting (especially during dry weather), yellowing, stunting

below ground

root feeding, tunnels, secondary root rots

increased susceptibility

seedlings, 
cool wet springs, 
high organic matter in soil

biology:

O/W as eggs, nymphs, adults
many offspring, short-generation time, asexual reproduction

physical:

protect with polyester-fiber row covers 
aluminum foil collars 
spray forcefully with garden hose
yellow sticky traps 

cultural:

proper N fertility 
compost culls

biocontrol:

conserve natural enemies
mass-releases from commercial insectaries

least-toxics:

insecticidal soap
pyrethrin
superior summer oil
neem

conventional insecticides:

Cygon, diazinon, malathion, Thiodan
