To promote
better integration of education and research, an annual program
of events is to take place including field and laboratory
visits by participating students and mentoring faculty to
research sites in Costa Rica and Idaho, a field day, a joint
Student/Faculty Symposium, and an interdisciplinary training
workshop. Comparison among interdisciplinary projects in different
geographic regions will be a major emphasis of the IGERT annual
meeting. At this meeting student project groups will present
their research within symposia organized around broad themes
relevant to work conducted in all the regions. Symposia will
include:
 |
1)
Assessing cultural perspectives and educating human
participants in fragmented landscapes on biodiversity
issues,
2)
Managing secondary forest for biodiversity conservation
and productivity,
3)
Managing economically important organisms in fragmented
landscapes, and others, depending on student and faculty
interest.
|
Symposia
will be structured to allow research teams to deliver individual
and group presentations, followed by breakout sessions in
which principles and themes developing in the projects are
analyzed, compared and contrasted. A report summarizing these
discussions will be produced from each symposium. A possible
outcome of this structure will be thematic published review
papers authored by IGERT fellows and faculty. The annual meeting
and symposia will provide participating students the opportunity
to share thoughts and experiences of working in Central America,
and how this relates to their development as professionals.
