The
four video programs from the Feeding Young Children in Group Settings
series were broadcast live during the fall of 2000. These videos
have been edited and are available for purchase in both DVD and videotape format.
Tapes
of single sessions are $80.00 and the set of four is $300.00.
Each
video in the Feeding Young Children in Group Settings series includes
nearly two hours of instruction. Each video program contains real
life examples of children in group settings and perspectives from
other experts in the field.
The videos may be used individually or as part of the full curriculum.
The series is an excellent training resource for individual viewing
or for group workshops.

Length: 1 hour 40 minutes
The introductory session identifies the six principles for feeding
young children in group settings and presents strategies for implementation.
The six principles are:
1.
Adults should eat with children.
2. Adults choose what is served and how it is served.
3. Children choose how much to eat.
4. Children need a variety of foods.
5. Children should serve themselves.
6. Adults set the feeding environment.
The
session also illustrates the relationships among child development,
nutrition, and food safety.
Featured topics include addressing safety issues, modeling behaviors,
reinforcing internal cues, and building a sense of community.
Methods are presented to help caregivers evaluate their own feeding
environments.

Length: 1 hour 42 minutes
This session examines how children develop and describes how to
create mealtime environments that meet your children's developmental
needs.
The video describes principles of development related to auditory
perception, motor abilities and coordination, cognitive skills,
and language abilities.
The program also presents an overview of child development from
birth to five years of age and illustrates differences in children's
abilities at different stages.
The session will help caregivers establish mealtime routines that
offer children opportunities to learn group skills, skills for delaying
gratification, language skills, and self-help skills.

Length: 1 hour 46 minutes
Caregivers face the challenges of preparing and presenting healthy
and safe meals for children in group settings.
This program describes ways create and present nutritious meals
that are safe, visually appealing, and include a variety of foods.
It also illustrates how healthy eating habits are promoted by use
of the six principles for feeding young children in group settings.
Topics covered include menu planning, food safety, the "good foods
vs. bad foods" myth, how to recognize children's internal hunger
and satiety cues, and the problems associated with restricting foods
or pressuring children to eat.

Length: 1 hour 45 minutes
This session identifies some of the most common questions that caregivers
and parents have about best practices in feeding children.
Controversial
techniques, such as use of a "no thank-you" bite to introduce foods,
are explored.
The instructors use the six principles for feeding young children
in group settings as the foundation for providing answers to a broad
range of questions.
The program also includes a special food safety section on recognizing
and avoiding choking hazards.
