CALS Computing Services

Policies

Guidelines for acceptable computer use at the UI are provided in the ITS Computer Use Policy . Briefly, within an environment that promotes maximum freedom, the policy prohibits unauthorized access to or attempts to access computers and accounts, requires conduct that promotes a productive computing environment, and prohibits unreasonable consumption of limited computing resources.

Site licensed software is available for Microsoft products and statistical packages. “Site licensed” does not mean that the software is available free of charge for use at the UI. Rather it means that special pricing has been obtained for the UI and licenses must be obtained for each computer.

Manufacturers' software licenses govern the use of computer software. College personnel and personnel working on behalf of the college shall not install software on computers used for college work in violation of the license agreement, nor shall CCS personnel be asked to install software in violation of the license agreement. Furthermore, CCS personnel will not work on any computer known to have illegal software. Most computer software requires a license for each computer.  One exception in general is that software licensed and installed on a person's office computer. Each user is responsible for adhering to the licensing agreements for all software used on his/her computer.

Fines are very high for violations of software license agreements. Do not risk the liability by violating software license agreements. If you think you can't afford a license for each computer, you probably can't afford the computer and you certainly can't afford the fine!

Home Computer Support

All services provided by CCS technical personnel will be available for a UI computer used in a private home provided the computer is brought to a UI College of Agricultural & Life Sciences facility for service. CCS will not provide on-site service in a private home. The computer is eligible for site-licensed software through the CCS.

Limited services provided by CCS technical personnel will be available for a privately owned computer provided it is designated by a College of Agricultural & Life Sciences administrator as the employee's primary computer for College of Agricultural & Life Sciences work and the computer is brought to a UI College of Agricultural & Life Sciences facility for service and scheduled with CCS personnel. Service is limited to work-related software installation and configuration. The computer case will not be opened. No hardware components will be added, removed, or replaced. The computer will not be eligible for site-licensed software available through the UI Bookstore.

Full telephone support by CCS technical personnel will be available for a UI computer in a private home and a privately-owned computer in a private home provided it is designated by a College of Agricultural & Life Sciences administrator as the employee's primary computer for College of Agricultural & Life Sciences work.

When a UI College of Agricultural & Life Sciences computer is purchased for use in a private home, preference should be given to brands recommended by CCS for reasons of long-term support.
