Extension Beef Specialist

Leads Beef Extension and Research programming efforts in the areas of beef cattle nutrition, reproduction, management, and marketing across the state of Idaho.  Efforts involve cooperation among University of Idaho Extension Beef Specialists, Department of Animal and Veterinary Science faculty, and county Extension Educators, in addition to the Idaho Beef Council, Idaho Cattle Association, and Idaho State Department of Agriculture.

Current extension efforts primarily involve producer education on Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) and the rapidly-developing National Animal Identification System (NAIS) in Idaho.  In addition, applied research is being conducted on beef cattle trace mineral nutrition (specifically copper, zinc, manganese, and selenium), and efficiency in beef cattle (as measured by Residual Feed Intake or RFI) in cattle selected for varying abilities to deposit intramuscular fat.

Extension Dairy Specialist
 
Major educational programs emphasize the enhancement of reproductive efficiency, milk quality, and risk management on Idaho dairy farms. Current research focuses on factors important to increasing the efficiency of artificial insemination in cattle.  Dr. Dalton cooperates with University of Idaho faculty to strengthen and develop the Dairy Science Program in the Animal and Veterinary Science Department.

4-H Technology and Operation: Military Kids (OMK) Coordinator
 
 
  Operation: Military Kids promotes community outreach, support and involvement for military youth from all branches (Reserve and Guard) through 4-H and other youth programs before, during and after family members' deployment.  Projects include Speak Out for Military Kids (lock-ins, camps, and activities), developing community collaborations, providing a free state-of-the-art Mobile Computer Lab to communities throughout the state, letter-writing workshops to raise consciousness about the issues faced by guard and reserve families and youth, and free Hero Packs* that my be awarded to recognize military youth.

*The Hero Pack Community Service initiative is sponsored by the USDA Army Youth Development Project, a collaboration of the US Army Child and Youth Services and the National 4-H Headquarters, CSREES, US Department of Agriculture under Auburn University Special Project #USDA-EXCA-3-9030.

Expertise in range economics, livestock production economics, public land policy, and  coordinated resource management (CRMP). Educational programs center on economic analysis of range improvement, development and implementation of range management plans, livestock production economics and the economic impacts of choices made in public land policies. Research deals with private grazing lease arrangements, federal and state grazing fee issues and the Experimental Stewardship Program.

Maureen gives leadership to Idaho 4-H Afterschool and is the lead editor for the CYFERnet School Age Editorial board. She is the state evaluator for the Children Youth and Families
At Risk (CYFAR) program in Canyon and Owyhee counties. Maureen, in collaboration with Carol Benesh, 4-H Youth Specialist, offer visual arts and technology camps across the
state. She is currently co-chair and writer for the 4-H Cooperative Curriculum System Advanced Visual Art curricula.
